Industrial Filter Cloth Common Problems and Solutions (I)

Filter cloth is the core of filtration equipment, which directly affects the separation effect and plays a key role in liquid-solid separation. Many common problems occurs when using, the following summary of common problems and solutions to help improve filtration efficiency and extend the life of the filter cloth.

1.Clogging

Causes: solid particle accumulation, sticky material residue, insufficient cleaning.

Solutions:

Physical cleaning: Employ high pressure water jet or compressed air to backwash.

Chemical cleaning: Use alkaline or acidic cleaning agents for sticky materials (e.g. grease).

Adjustment of the process: This may involve reducing the feed concentration, optimizing the filtration pressure or flow rate.

Optimization of the filter cloth: Choose a filter cloth with a smooth surface or a non-stick coating (e.g. PTFE coating), or increase the pore size.

2. Abrasion

Cause: High hardness of particles, frequent mechanical friction, material is not wear-resistant.

Solutions:

Material upgrading: use high wear-resistant materials such as nylon, polyester or ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE).

Structure optimization: Increase the thickness of filter cloth or add abrasion-resistant coating (e.g. polyurethane).

Regular inspection: Replace the filter cloth areas with serious wear and tear in time to avoid rupture.

3. Chemical Corrosion

Cause: Contact with strong acid, strong alkali or organic solvent.

Solutions:

Using corrosion-resistant materials, such as polypropylene (acid-resistant), PTFE (strong corrosion-resistant) and PVDF (organic solvent-resistant), is recommended.

Prior to implementation, a chemical compatibility assessment should be conducted.

Coating protection: add anti-corrosion coating or use composite filter cloth.

4. Deformation or Shrinkage

Cause: High temperature environment, excessive mechanical stretching.

Solutions:

High temperature resistant materials: Aramid, glass fibre or PTFE (temperature resistant up to 260°C).

Structural enhancement: add metal mesh support or skeleton.

Process control: It is also vital to avoid drastic temperature fluctuations and to ensure that the operating temperature is within the tolerance range of the filter cloth.
